The Somme - From Defeat To Victory
this clip dwells on the grievous loss of life during the battle of the Somme, and in particular how it devastated entire communities in Great Britain. the film was made by the (now sadly departed) BBC's in-house documentary department, approaching the battle from a unique viewpoint - how despite being defeated, the allied armed forces took the lessons learned during fighting, and applied them in subsequent battles to eventually win the war against Germany
the effect that the loss of Thiepval had on the German offensive and the subsequent allied revival in 1916, is examined in this clip
